View Full Version : Noisy tappets
hi,[again]
my lifters are a bit noisy and annoying, been looking at replacements and cheapest i can find is 240quid. just spent out on new exhaust system so cant afford them till end of next month. i have not driven car now for 2 days fearing that this problem will get worse and engine might blow. had the grey import for 2months now and love it to bits, just dont want to trash the engine, many thanks GRAY.
drop the oil and use a thinner grade 5w-30 has worked for me in the past. it will get into all the tiny nooks and crannys. also find somewhere that selle DAE engine flush. dump that in before you drop the oil and do about 50-100 mile so it gives everything a good clean. chances are the tappets are caked in crud.
so to sum up...
flush, drop, replace. it will cost you probably £20. £30 if you use good oil.
DAE engine flush is about £5-6
hi, done all that yesterday, apart from the mileage, used 10/30 oil, flush and oil change again do you think??

you got a GPX? if so they are adjustable,
if not then as above really, most GR's have noisy tappets on start-up, not a big issue really. if it does bother you that much then iirc camskill sell the sets

10/30, is that right for a GR? thought it was 10/40 semi-synth, or preferred 5/40 fully-synth
Good news is, apart from being really really annoying, noisy tappets wont explode, or cause harm to furry animals :) You can try hiding it a bit with different grade oils and flushes, but ultimatly they will need replacing (On GR), or as said above adjusted on a GPX. Generally speaking they are more noisy on startup.
@ jopes, if you diddnt do any decent mileage with the flush in then chances are nothing got cleaned right. on some flushes it states fast idle for 15 mins . but that really is never enough.

Jopes, join up and camskill give 5-10% discount off those prices which will cover all or some of the membership. Just for a laugh, did you get a quote for them from Mitsi?. Ohh and WTTC
thanks to you all for the advice. I will flush and drop oil again but this time i will do mileage instead of just idle speed.
Im a bit confused as to which oil should be used, i will go with thinner i think 5/30, but what make is best? suggestions would be appreciated.
Also price on tappets? seen them online for 240. is that cheap or expensive. many thanks jopes.
GR or GPX?
GPX has adjustable tappets.

jopes_4 is your oil filler cap on the left or right as you look at it from the front? It makes a big difference to whether you need to buy £240 of tappets or just a tool. £240 is the going price from camskill
On the right, its GR model, any idea on what oil i should use??
if its had a good flush then 10w 40 should be fine i only use lighter oils when i want to get into small gaps that may be clogged.
I use silkoline pro-s 5-40 fully synthetic and that sorted my tappets out on my gr, mine was only for a few seconds upon start up, on another note Its a reallyu good oil to use.
